Our Patron

Uncle Jack Charles

The Green Room Awards Association is thrilled to welcome our new Patron, the inimitable Uncle Jack Charles. Uncle Jack Charles is an actor, musician, potter and gifted performer, but in his 76 years he has also been homeless, a heroin addict, a thief and a regular in Victoria’s prisons. A member of the Stolen Generation, Uncle Jack co-founded the first Aboriginal theatre company Nindethana in 1972. His awards include the prestigious Tudawali Award, honouring his lifetime contribution to Indigenous media, a Green Room Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and most recently, the Ochre Award.

The Green Room Awards would like to warmly thank our outgoing Patron, the wonderful Julia Zemiro. Thank you Julia, for your years of support and advocacy for Victoria's vibrant performing arts sector.

Green Room Award members have voted in Sapidah Kian and Eugyeene Teh as the association’s co-presidents.

At this transformative and inauspicious time, the association plans to recalibrate. This will include a focus on developing inclusive practices that more strongly reflect its members, the sector and wider community.

Introducing themselves and their priorities, the co-presidents have written a letter to association members and industry.

“Growing a vision for the awards with our members in this ever-evolving landscape is our priority,” said the new co-presidents.

“We all need to adjust and reconsider practice as well as purpose while we navigate the pandemic and the emergence from restrictions that have impacted our sector so heavily.”

Sapidah and Eugyeene paid tribute to the incredible accomplishments of former president Hilary Glow and the hard work of our panels and membership base.
