The Alternative and Hybrid Performance panel (AHP) is an autonomous and interdisciplinary panel that seeks to view contemporary performance with different eyes, focusing on conceptual realisation, mise-en-scène and elements of hybridity, unconventionality and innovation. We endeavour to view work that is both alternative to conventional performance practice and experimental in form, style and content.
Given these criteria, the range of performance material viewed by the panel is diverse and continually evolving. Categories of performance that the Alternative and Hybrid Performance panel may consider include site-specific events, contemporary circus, live art, visual and/or physical theatre, contemporary puppetry, hybrid events, performance installation, one-off performances or events, conceptual performance, multi-media/online performance, etc.
The panel may also view interdisciplinary work that crosses over with specific artforms covered by other panels (such as Theatre, Dance or Opera) yet our perspective is clearly on the alterity or hybridity of the performance elements involved and their creative integration.
As with all Green Room Award nominations the intention of those made by the Alternative and Hybrid Performance panel is to recognise excellence in contemporary performance practice. As a consequence, categories awarded may alter from year to year depending upon the nature of works seen and the strength of the field in that year.
